Manchester United in hunt for €60m teenage sensation on Bayern Munich radar
Manchester United are interested in signing Benfica midfielder Joao Neves this summer as manager Erik ten Hag looks to bolster his options in the middle of the park, according to Sky Sports Italy reporter Gianluca Di Marzio.
The Red Devils want to strengthen the department and are in talks with Chelsea over a deal for England international midfielder Mason Mount, while the representatives of Brighton & Hove Albion ace Moises Caicedo have also been contacted.
Man United are keeping their options open given the finances involved in recruiting Mount or Caicedo, and Neves has also emerged as a target, but they face competition from Bayern Munich and Wolverhampton Wanderers for the 18-year-old.
Portuguese outlet A Bola, (via iMiaSanMia) reported that the Benfica academy graduate is on the radar of the Bundesliga giants, and his club want to renew his contract and raise his €60 million release clause to keep suitors off their man, so the Red Devils will need to act quickly if they want the teenage sensation.
Neves played 20 games across all competitions last term, helping Benfica win the Primeira Liga and reach the quarter-final of the Champions League, but whether he is ready for the Premier League after just one season of first-team football remains to be seen.
As per WhoScored, the Man United target has no significant weaknesses, with aerial duels, passing, tackling and blocking the ball all highlighted as his ‘very strong’ strengths, and he is a player to watch out for in the near future.
The fact that Neves is on the radar of Bayern speaks volumes, and more clubs will join Man United scouts in watching him at the ongoing European Under-21 Championship, where he has bagged a goal in three appearances and helped Portugal book a place against England in the quarter-finals.
The Red Devils need players capable of providing immediate competition and cover for Casemiro, and while the Benfica sensation is a physical box-to-box player who prefers to progress play via passes rather than carrying up the field, he is one for the future.
